EXCURSIONS
on the north coast of Crete is the capital of the administrative district of the same name. It is considered the cultural center of the island.
The city is home to several museums as well as the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Crete.
The landmark of Rethymnon is the Fortezza, a citadel from the Venetian period that stands on a rock in front of the bay. Inland the Venetian old town joins, in whose winding streets there are countless small shops, handicraft workshops, cozy bars and restaurants with a very varied cuisine.
Immediately below the citadel lies the picturesque Venetian harbor, which is surrounded by the jetties of the new ferry port. Every Thursday the legendary Rethimniot weekly market takes place in the large parking lot in the center.
He has changed his location several times in the previous years, but that has not done anything to the colorful hustle and bustle.

Seinen Standort hat er in den Jahren zuvor mehrfach gewechselt, aber dem farbenprächtigen Treiben hat das keinen Abbruch getan.

A fishing village on the central north coast of the island. It belongs to the Rethymnon district and is 21 km east of the city.
To the west of the harbor there are a few small bays with sandy beaches. In the past, the port of the town of Eleftherna, which is 22 km to the south, was located in Panormo.
Eleftherna, excavated a few years ago, was one of the most important cities of ancient Crete.
In the village as well as around the harbor there are a number of apartment houses, taverns and shops that are geared to the requirements of a more relaxed tourism.
In summer the village center is closed to cars and the taverns set up additional tables in the narrow streets.

is a tiny village on the western bay of Rethymnon. Today the name also refers to the entire stretch of coast from the mouth of the Petres river to the fishing village of Georgioupolis.

Er ist deshalb auch für kleine Kinder gut geeignet.
Am östlichen Ende bei der Petres-Mündung gibt es ein Tauchzentrum.
Weiter westlich am breitesten Strand-Abschnitt stehen einige größere Hotelanlagen, bei denen es vielfältige Wassersport-Angebote gibt.

However, a third beach is considered to be the most beautiful beach in Bali, which is hidden in a small rocky bay just behind Cape Korakias, which marks the northwestern tip of the Bay of Bali.

At the lower edge of the village there is a spring with picturesque waterfalls, from which the city of Rethymnon, 23 km away, draws its drinking water.
The village is a popular destination with typical taverns (one of them with its own trout farm), traditional kafenions and bars, a small museum and a fascinating view of the peaceful surroundings, the White Mountains and the Aegean Sea.
The Lappa archaeological site is right next door.

The landmark of Georgioupolis is a tiny white chapel at the far end of the pier. There are a number of cozy cafes and restaurants in the center and at the port. The original Mediterranean ambience of the place can still be felt today.

is a picturesque, somewhat sleepy village above the western bay of Rethymnon, just under 7 km southeast of Georgioupolis.
It is best known for Lake Kournas, which lies 2 km below the village and is the only freshwater lake in Crete. At least as the only "real" one, because it is of natural origin and filled with water all year round.
The main source of the lake is deep under water near the southern shore. On the northern bank there are a few taverns and a pedal boat rental. And of course you can swim in Lake Kournas: without chlorine and without salt.

Die Hauptquelle des Sees liegt nahe dem südlichen Ufer tief unter Wasser. Am nördlichen Ufer gibt es einige Tavernen und eine Tretboot-Vermietung.
Und natürlich kann man im Kournas-See schwimmen: ohne Chlor, und ohne Salz.

It is only separated from the south coast by the coastal mountains. The surrounding area is particularly scenic, and the town itself, dominated by the 878 m high mountain Vorisis, is very picturesque.
The landmark of Spili is the Venetian-style fountain with its 25 water-spouting lion heads, and there are also some old houses that actually date from the Venetian era.

is one of the most scenic approaches to Crete's central mountain range. It extends from Prasses (10 km from Rethymnon on the north coast) in a south-easterly direction to Adopoulou (10 km from Agia Galini on the south coast).
It leads between the villages of Visari and Kouroutes in a distance of only 7 km (as the crow flies) past the 5 highest peaks of the Ida massif: Stolistra / 2,325 m, Timios Stavros / 2,456 m, Angathias / 2,424 m, Vouloumenou / 2,267 m and Koussakas / 2,209 m. The Ida Mountains are also called "Psiloritis" in modern Greek, which means "the tall one".

Around 1,500 m west of the village center is the small bay of Souda with its equally small sandy beach.

Rund 1.500 m westlich vom Dorfzentrum liegt die kleine Bucht von Souda mit ihrem ebenso kleinen Sandstrand.

lies on the southern slope of the small Vouvala massif, which separates the higher Kedros massif from the south coast. The most scenic road to Agia Galini leads from Nea Kria Vrisi via Melambes around the Vouvala (947 m).

If you leave the road from Rethymnon to Agia Galini near Kria Vrisi and turn south, you come through the village of Saktouria and then to Cape Melissa. On the left it goes down to the eastern beach of Agios Pavlos.
There are a couple of taverns with guest rooms, another with a mini market, and a beach bar. On the right a new road leads down to the western beaches. The sand dunes and the unique view over the Libyan Sea, to Preveli and, if the visibility is good, even to the White Mountains ("Lefka Ori") are remarkable.
Since 2006, the paved road has opened up all the dream beaches on this section of the south coast. Right next door is Triopetra (also known as Akoumia beach), and from there it goes via Agia Paraskevi to Ligres (Kerames beach) to Finikas (Preveli palm beach).

Wenn man die Straße von Rethymnon nach Agia Galini bei Kria Vrisi verlässt und nach Süden abbiegt, kommt man durch das Dorf Saktouria und dann zum Kap Melissa.
Links geht es zum östlichen Strand von Agios Pavlos hinunter. Dort gibt es ein paar Tavernen mit Gästezimmern, eine weitere mit einem Mini-Markt, und eine Strand-Bar.
Rechts führt eine neue Straße hinunter zu den westlichen Stränden. Bemerkenswert sind die Sanddüne und der einmalige Blick über das Libysche Meer, nach Preveli und bei guter Sicht sogar auf die Weißen Berge ("Lefka Ori").
Seit 2006 erschließt die asphaltierte Straße sämtliche Traumstrände an diesem Abschnitt der Südküste.
Gleich nebenan liegt Triopetra (auch bekannt als Strand von Akoumia), und von dort geht es über Agia Paraskevi nach Ligres (Strand von Kerames) bis Finikas (Palmenstrand von Preveli).

Zwischendurch kann man am Hafen gemütlich in einer Taverne sitzen und zusehen, wie die auf die Fähre wartenden Fahrzeuge sich versammeln.
Oder man nutzt die Zeit für einen Abstecher, z.B. via Anopoli nach Aradena mit seiner berühmten Talbrücke, oder die unzähligen Serpentinen hinauf nach Imbros, das für seine Käsepfannkuchen mit Thymian-Honig nicht weniger berühmt ist.

Über all dem liegt ein blauer Himmel, und der Blick reicht über die Messara-Bucht nach Agia Galini, zum Kedros und bei guter Sicht sogar bis zu den Weißen Bergen ("Lefka Ori").
Es ist leicht nachzuvollziehen, warum sie sich ausgerechnet hier niedergelassen haben.

begins at the southern end of the Omalos plateau in the White Mountains ("Lefka Ori"), around 42 km south of the city of Chania.
The entrance is 1,127 meters above sea level and is called the wooden staircase ("Xyloskala"). It is towered over by the 2,080 meter high Gingilos, which is considered to be Crete's most beautiful mountain. A path leads down the 16 km long gorge through the largest nature reserve on the island.
He passes the abandoned village of Samaria and at the southern exit of the gorge the Iron Gate ("Sideroportes"), where the rock walls form a corridor only 2 meters wide. Another 2 km south is the old fishing village of Agia Roumeli.

Ein Pfad führt die 16 km lange Schlucht hinunter durch das größte Naturschutzgebiet der Insel.
Er passiert das verlassene Dorf Samaria und am südlichen Ausgang der Schlucht die Eiserne Pforte ("Sideroportes"), wo die Felswände einen nur 2 Meter breiten Korridor bilden.
Weitere 2 km südlich liegt das alte Fischerdorf Agia Roumeli.
Dort kann man am Strand der antiken Stadt Tarra im Libyschen Meer baden oder sich in einer der Tavernen ausruhen, während man auf die Fähre wartet, die Paläochora und Sougia mit Chora Sfakion verbindet.

is the name of an ancient settlement at Cape Koutri on the west coast of Crete, at the southern end of the large Gramvoussa peninsula and at the northern end of Livadi Bay.
Today the name refers to the 3 km long sandy beach of Livadi Bay. The wind from the sea has shaped it out of fine sandstone, and in some places you can still find the bizarre remains of these sandstone rocks.
The journey is a bit tedious over the last few kilometers. You first cross Kastelli Kissamos and drive past both ports until the world seems to be over. Then keep to the left until you come to Platanos, and there you look for one of the signposts to Falassarna, some of which are hidden between tall grass on the side of the road.
The way is worth it, because above the bay there is a unique view of the sea and the surrounding mountains. And the beach is considered one of the best on the island anyway.

ist der Name einer antiken Siedlung am Kap Koutri an der Westküste Kretas, am Südende der großen Halbinsel Gramvoussa und am Nordende der Livadi-Bucht.
Heute bezeichnet der Name den 3 km langen Sandstrand der Livadi-Bucht.
Der Wind vom Meer hat ihn aus feinem Sandstein geformt, und an einigen Stellen kann man noch die bizarren Überreste dieser Sandstein-Felsen finden.
Die Anfahrt ist auf den letzten Kilometern etwas mühsam. Man durchquert zunächst Kastelli Kissamos und fährt an beiden Häfen vorbei, bis die Welt zu Ende zu sein scheint.
Dann hält man sich links, bis man nach Platanos kommt, und dort sucht man sich einen der Wegweiser nach Falassarna, die teilweise zwischen hohem Gras am Straßenrand versteckt sind.
Der Weg lohnt sich, denn oberhalb der Bucht öffnet sich ein einmaliger Ausblick auf das Meer und die umliegenden Berge. Und der Strand gilt ohnehin als einer der besten der Insel.

means "deer island". There are no deer in Crete for a long time, but the small island on the southwest corner of the big island still exists.
A red coral reef connects the two islands, while the neighboring coastline is made up of fine white sand. The wind and waves carry amounts of this sand to the reef in the spring, and in late summer you can walk from one island to the other with dry feet when the tide is out.
In winter the storm then clears the sand from the edges of the reef and allows the corals to continue growing until the next spring. The reef with its pink edges, the neighboring white beaches and the blue sea around it almost form a South Seas paradise.
Only the palm trees are missing, instead there are shady pine trees.

bedeutet "Hirsch-Insel". Hirsche gibt es auf Kreta schon lange nicht mehr, aber die kleine Insel an der südwestlichen Ecke der großen Insel existiert noch.
Ein Riff aus roten Korallen verbindet die beiden Inseln, während die benachbarte Küstenlinie aus feinem weißen Sand besteht.
Der Wind und die Wellen transportieren im Frühjahr Mengen dieses Sandes auf das Riff, und im Spätsommer kann man bei Ebbe trockenen Fußes von der einen Insel zur anderen spazieren.
Im Winter säubert der Sturm dann die Kanten des Riffs wieder vom Sand und ermöglicht es den Korallen, bis zum nächsten Frühjahr weiter zu wachsen.
Das Riff mit seinen rosa Rändern, die benachbarten weißen Strände und das blaue Meer drum herum bilden schon beinahe ein Südsee-Paradies. Nur die Palmen fehlen, statt dessen gibt es schattige Pinien.

The two cities of Ierapetra on the south coast and Sitia in the east of the north coast also belong to the same administrative district. The city center is located on a small peninsula that juts east into Mirambelou Bay.
On the south side there is a small fishing and marina. On the north side of the peninsula is the actual port of Agios Nikolaos, from where several times a week ferry boats go to Piraeus, Rhodes, Heraklion and Sitia.
The excursion boats, which head for the former leprosy island of Spinalonga several times a day, have their anchorage here.

An der Nordseite der Halbinsel befindet sich der eigentliche Hafen von Agios Nikolaos von wo mehrmals pro Woche Fährschiffe nach Piräus, Rhodos, Heraklion und Sitia fahren.
Auch die Ausflugs-Boote, die mehrmals täglich die ehemalige Lepra-Insel Spinalonga ansteuern, haben hier ihren Ankerplatz.
To the side behind the harbor is Lake Voulismeni, a small freshwater lake that is connected to the harbor basin by a canal and serves as a berth for many small fishing boats.
Numerous restaurants, taverns, kafenions and souvenir shops are grouped around the harbor and the lake.
In the city itself there are some smaller hotels and apartment houses with a more private atmosphere.

Seitlich hinter dem Hafen liegt der Voulismeni-See, ein kleiner Süßwassersee, der über einen Kanal mit dem Hafenbecken verbunden ist und als Liegeplatz für viele kleine Fischerboote dient.
Um den Hafen und den See herum gruppieren sich zahlreiche Restaurants, Tavernen, Kafenions und Andenkenläden.
In der Stadt selbst gibt es einige kleinere Hotels und Apartmenthäuser mit eher privater Atmosphäre.
